Book Review: Married Lovers Married Friends

A couple of nights ago I finished the book “Married Lovers Married Friends” by Mr. and Mrs. Chapman. This is actually the second time I read this book and I liked it as much as the first time, so I am sure that I will be reading it in the next years to come. It is very entertaining reading as well as very spiritually moving. They have a way to not just teach how to make your marriage better but saying in a way you can relate. They use personal experiences (funny ones too) and use them as examples to teach those truths. I highly recommend this book to everyone, not only to people with marital problems, but just to those that want to better their marriage. Someone interested? ;)
I would like to share a couple paragraphs of the last 10 pages of the book. In this chapter they are dealing with the theme “When the going gets tough..”. To put everyone into perspective they are talking about how praying with your spouse strengthen the relationship:

“ We’ve had times we’ve been praying in one direction and God is going in another. But the times Annie and I have spent in prayer have done more than anything else to bind us together in a love that’s bigger than our own. Talking to God has refueled us to serve each other out of love for Christ, and because of that service our romance continues to grow. We believe it, because God’s Word says so and because we are seeing it work in our life together.
Even with these resources, though, I sometimes feel as if our marriage is a tiny outpost in the midst of enemy side.
Time pressure. The push to do it all and meet everyone’s expectations. Ka-boom!
Temptations to indulge in immoral thoughts or relationships, or to choose money or success over God’s plan for us. Blam!
Trials from the wear-and-tear of life and the pain of those around us whose suffering touches us so deeply. Pow!
Somehow in the midst of this onslaught, these moments of recommitment strengthen and refocus me. I may do things with my life, but if I fail my family nothing else matters as much. They are the pearl of great price, fully worth giving all I own.”

“Sometimes I wonder what battles we’ve lost because we stop fighting five minutes before the Lord is ready to raise the flag of victory. We so badly need to hold on to Him and to the commitments we’ve made. God will grace us with what we need to honor Him”--- Ladies, we sure could use this one in a lot more than just marriage, couldn’t we?

You are so right, Pilar! That last paragraph you quoted about giving up five minutes before God gives us the victory--that's exactly what I needed for today. Thank you!
